Hey luvs,
I have now been back to school for the first week of semester two. It has been a wee bit hectic, so much so that I haven't finished unpacking my clothes and hanging them up in the closet... okay so I've just been way to lazy to do it but whatever. I have three of the same teachers from first semester, lost two old ones (one good and one sucky), and gained two new ones who seem nice enough.
Monday was okay, if a little on the dry side. But how interesting can you get on the first day back to school after the holidays anyways? In Mag Editing we talked about what the class was going to be like, how the prof will try to improve from our feedback from last semester, etc. Book Editing was pretty much the same except the prof started to go into some of our course material but still let us out early.
Tuesday was with the luscious Prof Erik. It is really funny how in love the two mean girls are with this very married teacher (though one of the meanies is also in love with Ryan Gosling who is totally mine *L0L*). The class was all right, nothing too complicated -though I do find photoshop and indesign somewhat complicated- and we got out early because the techie people had to work on the computers for some reason. After getting back to the apartment I curled up with a book, intending to read for a bit before making a slightly late lunch, but ended up having a nap! ![]()
Wednesday was Magazine Marketing with one of the new profs, Marina. She seems nice enough even though she is making us do four group presentations.... I guess it could be worse as they are not individual presentations. She is originally from Yugoslavia and her accent is still fairly thick and she occasionally is unsure what English word to use even though she's lived here for years.
After class J, B, K, and I went around the neigbourhood for two hours pestering approximately thirty different businesses asking them if they would be interested in advertising in our magazine. Most said they'd think about it so *fingers crossed* some actually get back to us with a "yes" as every person in our class is responsible for selling $200 worth of ads
I had to do some errands -such as picking up cough meds- before going back to the apartment wanting nothing more than to fall into bed but unable because I still had five articles to edit for the online magazine OTD. These articles are supposed to be submitted by monday, edited by section editors on tuesday, and edited by me on wednesday but some of the articles weren't finished until wednesday afternoon!
I had to wait until the SE's were done editing them before I could go in and do a second once-over (and they usually do need another edit, I don't know how some of them miss such simple errors!)
BTW, One of my photos has been used for an article *happy dance* But I am not telling you which article so you'll have to find it by checking out the site, so there! Find my pic, read the stories, and be sure to leave (nice) comments! On The Danforth online magazine
Thursday was Online Magazines, an hour break, then both editing classes, making the longest day ever! For OM we had to divide into groups of 3-5 and we are going to make an online magazine via wordpress. Unfortunately, I got stuck with two definitely lazy people, one stubborn yet possibly lazy person, and an unknown quantity. For pity's sake the one girl said she wanted to be in a larger group because it meant doing less work! it was decided that the two girls who were absent would be drafted into our group
the adamant girl totally ignored my and the other girl's suggestions (not that i liked the other girls suggestion either) and decided what we were to do... which was the magazine version of a book assignment I did last semester -i mean totally identical!- and i did not want to do it again. thankfully, we found that the idea had already been done when researching the web so we have to figure out another idea.
Also during online Mag we were allowed to have a pitching meeting for the class to give story ideas for the OTD as we need five or six articles per week. I realized one of the mean girls obviously did not read my previous article because she pitched an idea that I already covered. I snagged claim on a story for the Valentine's themed week about the best gifts to buy for your SO and which local stores to buy them at... considering I already started something similar a day or so ago with the intent to pitch it I wasn't going to pass it up. The one I have been writing has a working title of A Guy's Guide to Gifts for Girls: Helpful tips for a man to plan the perfect date for his Valentine or something like that and suggests what gifts to buy based on his girl's personality type. Because I was just doing what to buy a girl I thought a guy should write a corresponding piece of what to buy a guy and I talked QT into doing it.
Well, technically I emailed both QT and the other guy in our class who had yet to write an article for online saying if neither of them wanted to write it, I'd have to beg one of the other two guys who were already writing stories
Anyhoo QT said he'd do the article and we chatted a bit about what I was looking for in an story from him. I also learned that even though we found out QT has a girlfriend -or did as of exams last semester- and I told myself over the Christmas holidays I was totally over my crush, but I'm so not ![]()
Friday was another freaking 8:30am class... sucky, huh? As per usual I did not get enough sleep and was therefore blurry-eyed and fuzzy-headed for the first two-hours of the class. The teacher seems nice and the girls-bathroom convo mostly concurred that they would like this prof... even if he does say "um" a lot. I found out that we will be holding a competition, doing a presentation, taking a midterm exam, and even holding a mock sales pitch to people who actually work in the publishing industry! talk about freaking frightening!!!
I walked down to the library after school to get a book recently written by a Canadian and published in Canada for my book editing presentation (can we say Kelley Armstrong? *L0L*), took a stroll down the Danforth to check out the stores to look into for my Vday OTD article, and came up with an idea in regards to the Online Magazine project.
My idea was to do an online mag called canadianreadaholic.ca and would be divided into sections based on genre -such as niche/hobby books, fiction, ya, nonfiction, book/movie adaptions, etc but were all by Canadian authors/publishers. Under each tab would be articles of book reviews, interviews (authors, publishers, other readers), thoughts on issues surround the book/author/etc, DIY trials (like cooking recipes, learning to knit, etc) and the results, and so on. I noticed one or two websites that focused on either one genre or one type of article, but nothing that combined it all, nor based only on canadian books. lazy-stubborn girl came back with a "lets do a magazine about movies! like reviews, and photos, and stuff". um hello? its been done! *gah*
The Picture Challenge
Day 01 - A picture of yourself with fifteen facts.
Day 02 - A picture of you and the person you have been close with the longest.
Day 03 - A picture of the cast from your favorite show.
Day 04 - A picture of a habit you wish you didn't have.
Day 05 - A picture of your favourite memory.
Day 06 - A picture of a person you'd love to trade places with for a day.
Day 07 - A picture of your most treasured item.
Day 08 - A picture that makes you laugh.
I found a lot of pictures that made me smile because they brought back happy memories, but finding one that makes me fight a laugh was a bit harder to locate... Then I came across a photo from a sleepover at Manni's back in high school. I can't remember why she was making a face but she was horrified when I took the picture and wanted me to promise never to let anyone to see it. I don't think I ever did make that promise, rather I managed to talk my way around it
